There's Nothing Wrong with Wanting More...

Mateo’s teacher had a facebook group with the parents of the class. Right before Thanksgiving break, she posted a photo of the kids' work. It was all these cute turkeys they colored and on the bottom they had to write a sentence about what they were grateful for… It was so cute, some kids wrote I am thankful for my mom, my dad, and my teacher. I am thankful for my toys, my school, my home… I was scrolling as fast as I could to get to Mateo's work... when I finally get to his work... I was hoping he would write I am thankful for my beautiful mom or something along those lines, you know...

 

NOPE!

 

Here's what he wrote ...

 

"I wish I will have a baby sister."

 

The only kid in the class that did not write what he was grateful for but instead for what he wishes to have! 

 

Don’t come for me, okay? We do teach our kid about gratitude, but I couldn’t ignore the fact that he was more focused on this one thing he's been asking for since his birthday in August (and he doesn’t let it go… he prays for it every night! Kid of big faith).  But here’s the thing, it's not like he doesn’t have a sibling! He does. He has Kai! But he wants another one! 

 

There is nothing wrong with wanting more. But what are the intentions of our heart? It’s kind of our human nature to overlook the blessings we currently have. When we compare our blessings, we lose sight of the MIRACLE! We tend to normalize our miracles. We become so familiarized with God’s abundance, provision, breakthroughs, that we forget about the fullness we’re currently living in. 

 

If you struggle with overlooking at God's blessings and you tend to compare a lot... I want to help you! Here are some tips and Bible verses that have helped me:

 

  1. Understand Your Unique Value:

  • Psalm 139:14: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

  • Reflect on how God has uniquely created you with specific gifts and purposes.

  1. Focus on Love:

  • 1 Corinthians 13:4: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud."

  • Focus on showing love rather than harboring envy, as love is central to Christian life.

  1. Trust in God’s Plan for You:

  • Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

  • Trust that God has a unique and good plan for your life, distinct from others.

  1. Practice Contentment:

  • Philippians 4:11-12: "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty."

  • Learn to find contentment in all situations, knowing that God provides what you need.

  1. Seek God’s Approval, Not Human Approval:

  • Galatians 1:10: "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

  • Focus on seeking God’s approval rather than comparing yourself to others and seeking their approval.
